Brickell

The transformation from a residential neighborhood into a major financial center.

Welcome to Brickell

Brickell is a highly urbanized community in Greater Downtown Miami, located just south of the city’s historic central business district. Nicknamed “Miami’s Manhattan”, Brickell is Miami's financial district and is home to international banks, foreign consulates, and skyscrapers housing many of the city’s most upscale residential and commercial properties.

The neighborhood was named after Mary Brickell and the Brickell family, who established a trading post in the area in 1871 and became its earliest developer. From 1910 to 1919, Brickell came to be known as Miami’s Millionaire’s Row, with streets lined by opulent mansions owned by wealthy locals and northerners. In the 1950s, these homes started giving way to high-density residential and commercial buildings, as Brickell made the transformation from a residential neighborhood into a major financial center.

Living in Brickell

Brickell’s population nearly tripled from around 13,500 in 2000 to almost 35,000 in 2016. This boom is credited to the rapid rise of new mixed-use developments, businesses, trendy bars, and fashionable restaurants in the area. The neighborhood is attracting residents from various parts of the country and the world, who love the combination of the cosmopolitan way of life and Miami’s gorgeous year-round weather.

Two mixed-use developments anchored Brickell’s unprecedented growth - Mary Brickell Village and Brickell City Centre. Mary Brickell Village opened in 2006 and features 200,000 square feet of retail and commercial space. Upscale condo complexes and offices have grown around “the shops”, as the village is popularly called.

Brickell City Centre was completed in 2016 at a cost of $9 billion. Spanning more than 9 acres, it features a five-story mall with a wide array of dining, shopping, and entertainment options, including a 107,000-square-foot Saks Fifth Avenue. The development also includes residential towers and mid-rise office buildings. Its showpiece is Climate Ribbon, a $30 million elevated trellis that acts as an environmental management system and is touted as a “masterpiece of art and science.”

On top of all these, living in Brickell means you’re no more than a few minutes away from the gorgeous beaches in neighboring Brickell Key, Miami Beach, South Beach, and Key Biscayne.

Brickell is served by Miami-Dade County Public Schools, which include the highly-rated Air Base Elementary School, George Washington Carver Middle School, and Coral Way K-8 Center.
