Palm Island is part of a trio of man-made islands in Biscayne Bay, found east of the neighborhood of South Beach. This guard-gated luxury community can be accessed by land from MacArthur Causeway and onto Fountain Street, which bisects the island and continues on to Hibiscus Island to the north. Residents can also, make their way to their home on the island by private boat or yacht. Palm Island was constructed in the early 1900s by the Biscayne Bay Islands Company, along with the neighboring Hibiscus Island and Star Island. In the 1920s, Palm Island gained some notoriety as the home of Palm Island Club, which was said to run illegal gambling and drinking operations during the Prohibition era. After Prohibition, the club transformed into Bouche’s Villa Venice nightclub, and eventually became the Latin Quarter club, a popular haunt for Miami’s affluent snowbirds. Latin Quarter was destroyed in a 1959 fire, and a playground now stands on its former location.
