Welcome to Fisher Island
Fisher Island is the perfect embodiment of exclusivity and ultra-luxury. Named the richest zip code in America
, the island is home to 800 residents, 85% of whom are seasonal. And while it’s located just three miles from Miami across Biscayne Bay, it can only be reached by private boat, ferry, seaplane, or helicopter.
Fisher Island was created by the government in 1906 when they dug a canal known as Government Cut to ease port traffic in the area. The canal separated the 216-acre land from what was to become Miami Beach. The island’s first owner was Dana Dorsey, Southern Florida’s first African-American millionaire, who sold it to developer Carl Fisher in 1919. In 2020, Fisher traded the island to William Vanderbilt II for a large boat and $10. The Vanderbilts used the island as a family retreat and remained its owners until 1944.
Fisher Island’s ownership changed hands several times after that but remained mostly a single-family property. Development of the island into the present-day multi-family community started in the 1980s, with the builders matching the Spanish architecture of the first mansions built here.
Living in Fisher Island
Home to some of the world’s most affluent personalities, Fisher Island has maintained the exclusivity it enjoyed as the Vanderbilt family’s estate. A ferry exclusively serves residents 24/7. Non-residents need to clear a security check before they’re allowed to board the vessel or enter the island.
Homeowners have to be members of the Fisher Island Club
, which runs and maintains the community’s amazing amenities. These include a 9-hole golf course and 18 tennis courts, some of which are made with the same surfaces as the Wimbledon and French Open courts.
The community has two deep-water marinas where residents can dock their yachts and boats, a full-service spa and salon, a fitness center, an observatory for stargazing, and an aviary. Fisher Island Beach Club features a mile-long private beach with sand imported from Bermuda.
Residents’ daily needs are met by a grocery store, a small bank, and a post office. There are eight upscale restaurants on the island, as well as a day school and an emergency services station. Golf carts are the preferred means of getting around, although residents can transport their cars by ferry. The historic Vanderbilt Mansion, built in the 1930s, is the island’s centerpiece, with the ultra-luxurious Fisher Island Club Hotel and Resort designed around it.
